There is a lot of confusion about the importance of spelling in PTE. Some students score quite low in spelling and still score more than 79 in all sections of PTE Academic, whereas others score 90 in spelling and still fail in PTE test miserably.

So, is Spelling really important in PTE Academic?

Spelling has direct and indirect influence over your score.

Direct Impact of Spelling in PTE Academic

There are only two question types in this exam in which spelling is evaluated directly.

The first question type is essay writing. In this question type, you get two points for spelling if you do not make any spelling error white writing your essay. If you get two essay questions in the test then you get two points each in each essay for your spelling provided you do not make any spelling errors. If you make one spelling error then they deduct your score by one point. If you make more than one spelling error then you get zero for spelling for that specific question.

The second question type where do you get a score for your spelling is summarize spoken text. In this question type as well you get two points per question if you did not make any spelling errors when answering that question. Similar to Essay writing, You lose one point if you make one spelling error and you get zero on your spelling if you make more than one spelling error.

If you do not make any spelling errors while answering your essay writing question or summarize spoken text you might get 90 out of 90 in spelling. What it means is if you have scored 90 in the spelling, it simply means you did not make any mistakes in writing your essay or summarize spoken text. However, you need to get a good score from other questions as well to score more than 79. Therefore you might score 90 in spelling but I still fail in the overall test especially if your performance is not good in other question types.

Therefore a person who scored 90 spelling but failed to get more than 79 in PTE is a person who did not make any spelling error in essay writing and summarize spoken text but did not perform that well in other scoring criteria or in other questions where the spelling is not directly Evaluated.

Indirect Impact of Spelling in PTE Academic

This, however, does not mean that spelling is not important in PTE. In fact, there are many other question types where you need to spell words correctly in order to get the full score for that specific question. As an example, you get points only when you correctly spell a word in Fill in the Blank question type in Listening of PTE Academic. Similarly, you get one point for every word you write correctly, which means in correct grammatical form and with correct spelling, in write from dictation.

This means if you have to fill seven blanks in Fill in the Blank of listening, then you might lose up to seven points if you cannot spell any of the words correctly. Likewise, in Write from Dictation, you might lose all the points if you cannot spell any of the words in the given sentence correctly. From this perspective, it is clear that the importance of spelling, although indirectly, is more in questions like Fill in the Blanks and Write from Dictation.

Conclusion

In conclusion, what we can see is, in questions where you choose words you want to write, which means essay writing and summarize spoken text, you get two points for each question for not making any spelling errors.
